Nosy Be means „big island“. But it is small, instead, compared to the truly gigantic island to which it belongs, Madagascar. Located in the far north of this island-nation, Nosy Be has become an attractive tourist destination in recent years, especially for its breathtakingly beautiful beaches and seabed. Thanks to its international airport Nosy Be (NOS), the island is now well served by flights connecting it to major African and European hubs, and during the dry season—between June and September, which corresponds to winter here—it offers visitors the best exotic itineraries.
Exploring Nosy Be
Upon arrival in Nosy Be, you can take advantage of our private, tailor-made transportation to quickly reach your hotels or the island’s main tourist attractions. For safaris or longer tours to the smaller islands or the coasts of Madagascar, it’s best to rely on local tour operators or public transportation… by land and sea.
Nature and History in Just 22km
From one end of the island of Nosy Be to the other – less than 22km – it takes a 40-45 minute drive (on roads that aren’t always well-maintained!) to get to many of the most interesting places with little effort. And the protagonists of the beauty you’ll admire are nature and history, perfectly intertwined and harmonious, here on the „big island“ of the north!
Aboveground forests and coral reefs on the seabed are home to stunning animals (tropical birds, chameleons, geckos, lemurs, whales) and rare animals such as the pygmy frog—the world’s smallest frog—and panther chameleons, among the largest in the world.
Human environments, however, still retain fascinating traces of a long and varied colonization (Arabs, Indians, French). You can admire them in the historic center of the capital Andoany, also known as „Hell Ville“ in honor of Admiral Hell (although in English this name gives rise to amusing legends about this „damned city“). You shall also discover traces of them in the fishing villages and inland farms. A trip to Nosy Be, in short, isn’t just about beaches and sunbathing.
Wonders Not to Be Missed
If you find yourself on Nosy Be, be sure to visit some truly unique places, wonders not to be missed because they are only in Nosy Be and form the island’s tourist identity. Among these is certainly the Sacred Tree, a gigantic centuries-old Bengal fig tree, brought here as a gift in 1836 (when it was already quite tall). It has grown far and wide, forming a veritable vegetal labyrinth known locally as „the cathedral“. People wrap it in a red cloth to symbolize its divinity! The Sacred Tree is located a few kilometers from the capital and is easily accessible.
Further away, on the southern coast of Nosy Be, is the protected nature reserve of Lokobe . This is home to unique animals such as the macaque lemur (maki), the Brookesia chameleon, colorful frogs, and boa constrictors. Also noteworthy are the beautiful endemic palms, wild pepper trees, vanilla trees, and medicinal plants.
Twelve km from Nosy Be airport is Mount Passot (329 m), the island’s best panoramic point, its summit located a short distance from the beautiful Lake Amparihibe. The spectacular Nosy Be waterfalls are located 20 km south. Mahazandry Bay is located 16 km from the capital and can be reached in about half an hour by car.
Sun, Beaches, and Coral
No one can talk about Nosy Be without mentioning its famous beaches, stunning both on the surface and beneath the water, where unique types of coral color the blue sea with new hues.
Tourists certainly love the warm, sandy shores of Madirokely and Ambatoloaka, where you can also experience an intriguing nightlife and savor the local cuisine. Andilana is the VIP beach, certainly beautiful and full of amenities, but also a bit overused and too „Westernized“. Mahazandry is the typical quiet beach where fishermen always smile at tourists. Some of the most sheltered and exotic beaches are scattered around Nosy Be’s smaller islets: to reach dreamy spots like Nosy Komba, Nosy Tanikeli, Sakatia, and the twin islets of Iranja, you’ll need to find local private transportation to take you there aboard tourist boats.
Among the smaller islands, Nosy Fanihy is a true diver’s paradise. Here, the seabed is rich with colorful corals and beautiful shells, making every dive a dream!
