Like almost all the buildings in Brasilia, the airport was also initially designed by architect Niemeyer but it was eventually made by the lesser known Tercio Fontana Pacheco. Officially operational since 1971, it was renovated in the 1990s and today handles an annual movement of 13.5 million people. It consists of two terminals and two runways that welcome domestic and international flights.

Brasilia was a strongly desired capital, built in the mid-twentieth century by the will of the Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek. Its aim was both to decongest Rio de Janeiro and to bring the nation’s political center to a more accessibile place, in the very heart of the Country.
