London is an increasingly popular destination for international tourism. Its fame has increased over the years, and it attracts more and more visitors. Some even return several times, because “a lifetime is not enough” to really get to know the British capital. Among the many tours you can choose from, beyond the classic and unmissable ones, there are those that take you to discover the London of Music, the London of Gastronomy and – if you like thrills – the London of Mysteries. How many ghosts are there in the shadow of Big Ben? So many that, even in this case, one tour will not be enough. You must come back!
Today, Farringdon is one of the liveliest and most modern stations on the London Underground. But in 1700 it did not exist and in its place there was a shop where a seamstress produced hats. It seems that one of the little workers of the seamstress was a thirteen-year-old orphan girl who was often targeted by the woman. She treated her badly, mocked her, left her without food for days. When the little girl died of starvation, the woman was arrested and sentenced to death. Even today, however, the spirit of the little orphan finds no peace. The story tells that… while waiting for the trains… from the darkness of the tunnels someone heard a child’s voice screaming and crying.
Where to find Farringdon: Farringdon station is located in the Islington district, a short distance from the historic heart of London. It is excellently connected by taxi, bus and underground from every London infrastructure.
Bank station is already a tourist attraction: in fact, many come here to see one of the tightest and most dangerous curves that underground trains have to face. The station literally develops following the circular wave of this curved track and the arrival of the trains at full speed is a truly impressive experience. But today’s station stands on an ancient necropolis (17th century) where the victims of the plague were buried. And it seems that, especially in the evening, the ghosts of the underground cemetery come to animate the halls of Bank. Would you be ready to meet them, or even just perceive them, in the darkness of the tunnel?
Where to find Bank Station: close to the Tower of London and Whitechapel, this London underground station is connected to all the airports and tourist sites of the capital via underground lines.
Jack the Ripper is the most famous serial killer in the world, yet he has “only” five murders to his credit. But the brutality of the killings remained in the newspapers of the time (1888) and in people’s imagination for a long time, generation after generation. The victims of Jack the Ripper, almost all young prostitutes, have not yet found peace after so much time: in fact, their ghosts – and in particular one, that of Annie Chapman – still wander in the Whitechapel neighborhood, where the killer struck, or in the surrounding areas such as Spitalfields, Brick Lane and Hanbury.
Where is Whitechapel: just 35 km from Heathrow airport, the Jack the Ripper neighborhood can be reached in an hour and a half by taxi and bus or in 50 minutes by train. The historic heart of London is not far away.
Westminster Abbey is not only one of the most beautiful and important churches in London, but also a sacred place where famous people rest in peace. There could be a crowd of ghosts of kings, queens, princes and bishops here … but the reports only concern one restless spirit: that of Father Benedict. The monk has appeared (according to witnesses) since the beginning of the 20th century, even in broad daylight, even among crowds of tourists. Some swear they mistook him for a local “guide”, as he would even accompany them to the exit at the end of visiting hours!
To visit Westminster: the abbey is less than an hour’s drive from Heathrow airport, well connected by tube (get off at Westminster or St James Park).
Is Lady Diana a ghost, today? Many believe so. Her soul cannot have found peace since she died suddenly and violently in the midst of the happiest moment of her life. Where exactly this ghost appears, however, is not known. Obviously in Paris, the place of her tragic end. But also in Windsor, where she is buried in a tomb surrounded by greenery and guarded by her beloved children. According to some tourists, however, the ghost of Lady D appeared – for who knows what reason! – at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Islington. Further confirmation is needed. Do you want to venture out and give it to us?
Where is Islington: a short distance from the tourist center of London, connected by taxi, bus and underground to every infrastructure.
The beautiful and ancient Tower of London, an immense and fascinating medieval castle, holds centuries of sad and violent stories. This was in fact one of the harshest prisons in Great Britain and also housed princes and kings. Anne Bolein and Catherine Howard, two of Henry VIII’s wives, died here, and the explorer Sir Raleigh was also imprisoned here for a long time. But many animals were also held captive at the Tower of London, including even a polar bear! And the many ghosts that populate this famous and touristic London monument make it extremely fascinating. Among them, the ghosts of Anne Boleyn, that of Raleigh (even if he did not die here) and … the ghost of the polar bear that wanders at the base of the tower in search of fish!
Visit the Tower of London: the heart of all classic tourist itineraries in London, it is about an hour and a half’s journey from the main airport (Heathrow) and an hour’s journey if you use the trains and underground. From here it is also easy to continue with the classic tour of Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the museums and the bridges over the Thames.
