We will tell you here.

Barcelona City of Festivals

Summer in Barcelona begins with an evocative festival and many others will follow later in months. The summer festival par excellence is that of San Juan. More than a religious celebration, it is a way to welcome the beautiful season in style, outdoors. In fact, on the night between June 23rd and 24th, concerts, tastings and theme events are organised on the beaches and in the clubs of the Barcelona seafront. It all ends with fireworks over the sea.

Every sumemr Sunday, in the Montjuic park, open-air concerts are held. People can attend (with an entrance fee) even while lying comfortably on the grass. Many take advantage of the Brunch Festival – this is the name of the event – to have picnics with family or friends, with excellent background music. In the same park, always during the summer season, open-air film festivals are held.

Those who love theatre, on the other hand, can crowd the Grec amphitheatre for the festival of the same name. This is still on the Montjuic hill, inside an open-air structure that recalls a Greek theatre in every way, with the stage in the centre surrounded by very high steps. The Teatro Grec festival usually takes place between July and August.

Art itineraries even in the summer

The ideal way to combine festivals and sightseeing is to go and see neighborhood festivals. In fact, each quarter in Barcelona organizes summer festivals, often themed and – always! – very colorful! Wandering around in search of festivals you can also explore the monuments of each “barrio”. Among the most famous festivals are those of the Gracia, that of Poble Sec and that of the Sants neighborhood. Walking under parades of colored umbrellas, or through floral decorations, you will learn about the local saints, folk traditions and popular dances.

There will be plenty of opportunities to follow the most classic itineraries of the old center of Barcelona, discovering the Gothic Quarter, the Sagrada Familia cathedral, Casa Batllò, Park Güell, the Old Port, the avenues of the Ramblas, the gigantic bulls arena called La Monumentàl, the many museums that tell the history, culture and art (Gaudì above all) of this wonderful location. Even if they are not as spectacular as the Sagrada Familia, do not miss a visit to the incredible Gothic churches of Santa Maria del Mar, Iglesia del Pì, the “Seu” – the current cathedral still waiting to be replaced one day (who knows when) by the completed Sagrada Familia.

Barcelona … sea, pools and nature

People come to Barcelona for the sea. To swim and sunbathe, dancing and sipping excellent drinks on the immense beaches overlooking the warm and rough Mediterranean … this is the perfect holiday. The most beautiful and famous beaches in the city are the ones everyone knows: Barceloneta, connected to the nearby fishermen village and excellent for families; Nova Icària, perfect for those who love water sports; Bogatell, surrounded by greenery and paths that allow you to walk before or after swimming; the relaxing and isolated Sant Sebastià. As an alternative, you can go and discover lesser-known corners along the Costa Brava where often each beach is linked to a symbol: the castle of Tossa de Mar, the magnificent hotels of Lloret de Mar, the monasteries of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the rocky peninsula that divides the bay of Blanes … just to name a few examples.

Those who prefer a less crowded but equally relaxing and worldly environment can sunbathe and swim in the public pools, gigantic tubs also used during the Olympics. Among the most famous are the Montjuic pool and the Ciudadella pool.

Speaking of Montjuic … this place often comes up in Barcelona itineraries. It is in fact a high hill overlooking the coast, which is home to public parks, private gardens and even restaurants and cafés with panoramic terraces. Its “twin” is Mount Tibidabo, which also hosts an amusement park as well as numerous panoramic balconies. Don’t forget to book some excursions on the trails of the Collserola Natural Park.
