Brasilia is a city with a very specific birthday. It was inaugurated on April 21, 1960, with the role of national capital already , aiming to foster—through its centrality—the development of Brazil ‘s interior regions and reduce the concentration of population and economic activity along the Atlantic coast. Compared to other American cities, which are between 500 and 200 years old, Brasilia is a “newborn baby”! And it is indeed a young and dynamic city. Today, Brasilia is the political and administrative center of the nation, home to the federal government, Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the main state institutions. But is it worth including it in a tourist itinerary? What’s so interesting to see in a city that arose from nothing just sixty years ago?
The new charm of Brasilia
It was President Juscelino Kubitschek who ordered the construction of Brasilia, finally realizing the century-long dream of a “central capital” for the nation. The project was entrusted to the leading architect of the time, Oscar Niemeyer, who worked alongside Lucio Costa and Roberto Burle Marx to create the urban plan, the landscapes and green spaces. It took only four years to create this masterpiece of modern and futuristic architecture… although even today, Brasilia struggles to attract tourists.
The shape of the city center is that of a winged thing (a bird or an airplane), with the main “body” housing all the political buildings and the residential areas arranged in the two “wings”. Obviously, the city has also grown beyond this shape and, while maintaining the order and practicality of the initial design, today it also offers many services. It has its own airport, Brasilia (BSB), which welcomes numerous domestic and international flights – also from Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and São Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) – and several efficient public transportation options, such as buses and the subway. Obviously, to cover the long distances surrounding the capital, it’s good to rent a vehicle with a driver.
The Temple of Architecture
One of the most fascinating aspects of Brasilia is its modern architecture. Many of the tourists who come here are architects, artists, or simply people passionate about unique cities. Here, the work of Oscar Niemeyer stands out, with curved lines, large reinforced concrete surfaces, and large windows to create elegant and innovative buildings.
Among the most famous works is the Palace of the National Congress, characterized by two towers flanked by two large domes, one convex and one concave, representing the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, respectively. Other iconic buildings include the Planalto Palace, seat of the Presidency of the Republic, the Alvorada Palace, the President’s official residence, and the Itamaraty Palace, home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Religious buildings also play an important role in the city’s identity. The Brasilia Metropolitan Cathedral is one of Niemeyer’s most famous works. Its structure, composed of sixteen concrete columns rising toward the sky, creates a spectacular visual effect. The interior is illuminated by splendid stained-glass windows that cast an intense and evocative light, making the cathedral one of the most visited sites in the capital.
Brasilia was designed with large open spaces, wide tree-lined avenues, and green spaces in mind. The city boasts numerous parks and recreational areas. Among these, Sarah Kubitschek City Park stands out, one of the largest urban parks in the world, where residents and tourists can play sports, walk, cycle, or simply relax surrounded by nature. Also nearby is Lake Paranoá, a man-made lake created to improve the local climate and provide space for boating, water sports, and tourism.
A large National Park just a stone’s throw away
Brasilia National Park is one of Brazil’s most important protected natural areas. Located near the capital Brasilia (a 20-minute drive), it was established in 1961 with the aim of preserving the Cerrado biome, a vast tropical savannah rich in biodiversity. The park extends over 40,000 hectares and is a key habitat for numerous animal and plant species, some of which are rare or threatened with extinction.
Among the animals that live in the park are the maned wolf, the giant anteater, the pampas deer, and numerous colorful bird species. The vegetation is characterized by low trees, shrubs, and grasslands, adapted to the hot climate and frequent periods of drought.
One of the main attractions of Brasilia National Park are the natural pools fed by crystal-clear waters, highly appreciated by visitors. The park also offers hiking trails that allow you to explore the landscape and observe wildlife in its natural habitat. Beyond its touristic value, the park plays a vital role in protecting the water resources that supply the Brazilian capital. Thanks to its ecological and scientific importance, Brasília National Park is a significant example of Brazil’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

Near Brasília, you can discover colonial cities with a rich history. Located within a 200 km radius, with a travel time of between one and two hours by car, cities such as Anàpolis, Luziânia, Marianopolis, and Pirenòpolis preserve Brazil’s most adventurous history. One of the most beautiful destinations to visit, based in Brasília, is Formosa. Located 81 km from the capital, it is a jewel of Brazilian colonial art, visible especially in the cathedral and the old station. Nearby, some prehistoric sites such as Toca da Onça and Bisnau preserve fascinating cave paintings.
Tourism in Brasília: is it really worth visiting?
In 1987, Brasilia was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO thanks to its extraordinary architectural and urban planning value. It is one of the few examples of a modern city included in the list of World Heritage Sites. This recognition testifies to the importance of its urban planning and the influence Brasilia has had on contemporary architecture worldwide. Another interesting aspect of this capital is its population, composed of people from all regions of the country. This cultural diversity is reflected in its cuisine, traditions, and artistic expression.
But is all this enough to make it an attractive tourist destination? Why give up Rio, São Paulo, or the Amazon rainforest to visit this modern city located almost a 30-hour drive from every interesting place in Brazil?
