Cape Verde: discover a brand new autumn trip

6 minutes read

According to statistics, the Cape Verde Islands are a top travel destination to discover in this autumn season, 2026. They appear to be the perfect spot for a “different” kind of getaway as the cold season begins though, actually, it’s not cold there at all. In fact, from November to June the climate is sunny and ideal for excursions. Located in Africa, off the coast of Senegal, and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Verde Islands have been an independent republic since 1975, despite a strong Portuguese influence. The archipelago has only recently begun to re-emerge as a prestigious tourist destination, and it is certainly “riding that wave”. Why not jump on board yourself?

Cape Verde and tourism

The Cape Verde Islands are a beautiful group of volcanic islands located off the west coast of Africa. The nation consists of ten main islands, each offering its own landscapes, culture, and attractions. With a warm climate, beautiful beaches, and a rich history, Cape Verde has become an increasingly popular tourist destination.

Tourism is one of the most important sectors of the Cape Verdean economy. Visitors are attracted by the islands’ sandy beaches, clear waters, and opportunities for swimming, diving, sailing, and windsurfing. Sal and Boa Vista are particularly famous for their long beaches and modern resorts, making them popular choices for relaxing holidays. Other islands, such as Santo Antão and Fogo, offer a different experience, with dramatic mountains, green valleys, volcanic landscapes, and excellent hiking opportunities.
Cape Verde also has a fascinating cultural heritage influenced by African and Portuguese traditions. Tourists can enjoy traditional music, especially morna, taste local dishes such as cachupa, and explore historic towns and villages. The friendly hospitality of the local people adds to the country’s appeal.

Although tourism provides jobs and supports economic development, it also creates challenges, including pressure on natural resources and the environment. Sustainable tourism is therefore important for protecting the islands’ beaches, marine life, and unique landscapes. Overall, Cape Verde combines stunning scenery, pleasant weather, adventure, and cultural experiences.

Cape Verde’s highlights

Among the most important islands of the archipelago, we love to mention Santiago, São Vicente, Sal, Boa Vista, Santo Antão, and Fogo. Santiago is the largest and most populated island and is the political and cultural heart of Cape Verde. The capital, Praia, is located here as well as Cidade Velha, a historic town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Santiago is known for its mountains, markets, traditional music, and diverse communities.

São Vicente is famous for its lively cultural scene. Its main city, Mindelo, is considered the cultural capital of Cape Verde and is closely associated with music, festivals, and the famous singer Cesária Évora. The island also has beautiful beaches and a picturesque harbor.
Sal and Boa Vista are especially important for tourism. Both are known for their beaches, clear waters, and sunny climate. Sal has developed into one of the country’s main tourist destinations, while Boa Vista is famous for its dunes, beaches, and sea turtles.

Santo Antão is renowned for its wonderful panoramas framing mountains and valleys. It is a favorite destination for hikers because of the wild nature and the rural villages scattered through it. Fogo, meaning “fire,” is dominated by an impressive active volcano. The island is famous for its “alien” landscapes, but also for coffee and wine production.

What to see in a detailed itinerary?

This fascinating island country of Cape Verde should be explored in detail. You might not have enough time to do it, but give yourself a try and enjoy some interesting “steps”. Of course, each island has its own character, so visitors can enjoy very different experiences depending on where they go.

One of the best places to start is the island of Santiago, home to Praia, the national capital of Cape Verde. In Praia, visitors should explore the Plateau, the historic centre of the city, with its colonial buildings, lively streets, cafés, and markets. The Sucupira Market is a good place to experience local life and find traditional products and crafts. Nearby, the Ethnographic Museum offers an introduction to Cape Verdean history and culture. A trip to Cidade Velha  , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also highly recommended. This historic town was an important centre of the Portuguese Atlantic trade and contains impressive remains of its colonial past.

The second most important city of Cape Verde is Mindelo, on São Vicente island: it is famous for its music, arts, colourful streets, and lively nightlife. Visitors can walk around the harbour, explore local markets, and visit the National Centre for Arts, Craft and Design (CNAD). A visit to the Del Rey Fort is a “must”, so is a visit to Palacio do Povo. Mindelo is closely associated with the famous Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora, whose musical legacy remains an important part of the city’s identity.

You shall take the chance to also visit Fogo, one of the most fascinating islands in Cape Verde. It is known for its dramatic volcanic landscape and unique culture. The island is dominated by Pico do Fogo, an active volcano that rises to about 2,829 metres above sea level. Its black lava fields, steep slopes, and fertile volcanic soil create a striking contrast with the surrounding Atlantic Ocean. The island’s main town, São Filipe, is famous for its colourful colonial houses, cobbled streets, and beautiful views. Visitors can hike through the volcanic landscape, explore traditional villages, and experience the warm hospitality of local communities.

Getting to the islands

Cape Verde, also known as Cabo Verde, can be reached only by airplane. The country has four main international airports but the most important one, receiving all the main tourist flights from Europe, Africa and America is located on Sal Island: Cabral Airport (SID) will be your reference hub. Before travelling, visitors should check passport requirements, visa rules and complete the required online pre-registration and airport security fee payment. These requirements depend on nationality and travel circumstances.

Airplane is the best way to move also from one island to the other, though you can also go by ferries. Within each island, taxis are a convenient option, especially private taxis with a dedicated driver; these are perfect for travelling from airports to hotels or visiting nearby attractions. Shared minibuses, locally known as aluguers, are cheaper and commonly used by local people. They connect towns and villages, although they may not follow fixed timetables. Buses are also available on some islands.

Exploring Cape Verde is quite straightforward, involving a mix of flights, ferries, and local transport. Planning your travel in advance allows you to enjoy the islands in comfort, as you uncover their natural beauty and welcoming culture.
