If the heat is bothering you and the Mediterranean summer is giving you no respite, you too are probably dreaming of a cool location, with more moderate temperatures, where you can go and relax. Take advantage of the advice that comes from European tour operators and that we have collected in this article, to identify a region or city where summer hits less hard. We are certainly talking about the north of the continent, but also about some unexpected areas that can offer beauty, interesting activities to do and a gentle climate to accompany it all.

Ireland: a holiday in Donegal

Ireland is always beautiful in summer, because even in this season it maintains spring temperatures, with fresh air and lots of greenery around. You would be spoiled for choice, for an Irish summer holiday which – among other things – is good both in the territory of the Republic of Ireland and in the British region of Northern Ireland (Ulster). We recommend booking in Donegal, which is a province located in the far north of the island and is divided between Ireland and Great Britain.

Here we invite you to visit the Irish part of Donegal. You could base yourself in the capital city that gives its name to the entire province, Donegal, overlooking the west coast; or go and explore Letterkenny, located on the edge of a fjord on the east coast. You could enjoy an excursion to Glenveagh National Park or admire the wild landscapes of the Sliabh Liag cliffs.

To reach Donegal, the reference airport is Donegal (CFN) which can be reached with connections from Dublin (DUB).

Norwegian Fjords: summer by boat

The Norwegian fjords are wonderful channels that, from the sea, enter the territory even for many kilometers. They are almost always navigable and for this reason tour operators recommend them to those who especially love boat and ferry trips. There are more than a thousand fjords in Norway, scattered along the entire coast, so you always need to choose the ideal tour.

Usually you start from Oslo and go into the country to discover places like Borgund, Sognefjord, the Hardangerfjord, the Vøringfoss waterfalls, the trails of the Kristiansand region. An unmissable stop is obviously the city of Bergen. The delicate temperatures of the Nordic summer combine with the continuous light, typical of the season, giving a holiday that is certainly fascinating, interesting and above all cool.

The reference airport is Olso Gardermoen (OSL).

Scotland: enjoy the coolness of Inverness

The “coolest city in Scotland” is Inverness. Where “cool” can also mean “strong, beautiful”. In fact, it is one of the northernmost cities in the British archipelago but it is also the city you use as a base to go and visit incredible places such as Loch Ness.
To visit Inverness you need less than three days, so it is also good for a hit-and-run holiday in search of pleasant temperatures. You can admire: the castle, the cathedral, the craft breweries, the botanical garden… and then, moving around, also the Highlander Museum, the prehistoric sites of the Clava Cairns, the Ness River and the famous lake (Loch) Ness with its museum dedicated to the “monster”.

To get to Inverness, you will land at Iverness airport perhaps coming from connections departing from London airports.

Holiday on the island of Rügen

The coolest Germany can be found on the Baltic coast. And in particular on the islands that dot this Nordic sea. Among the German islands (yes, Germany also has its archipelagos!) the most suitable for a nice holiday is Rügen. The most important centers are Bergen and Sellin (on the island’s territory) and Stralsund (the capital of the province to which it belongs), always well connected by roads and water transport. Among the attractions of the island, in addition to the beaches, it is worth enjoying the Jasmund National Park, the Kreidefelsen cliffs, Spyker Castle, the Arndt Tower.

The airport to consider for a holiday in Rügen is Rostock (RLG).

Azores Islands: “tropical” freshness

Lost in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, miles and miles away from Portugal to which they belong politically, the Azores Islands seem like a tropical paradise with beaches, cliffs, lagoons and colors. In summer, treating yourself to a few days of sea and sun here is an excellent choice. However, do not expect the burning temperatures of the tropics here. The Azores, from which the famous “anticyclone” of our weather takes its name, maintain a moderately cool climate even in the months of the “hot season”.

So, green light to an exotic tan, but without suffering. The most beautiful beaches for a holiday are in Santa Bárbara and Mosteiros (São Miguel Island), Porto Pim (Faial Island), Formosa (Santa Maria), Victoria or Biscoitos (Terceira).

Take as reference points the international airports of Horta (HOR) or Ponta Delgada (PDL).
