Enna is in the heart of the Mediterranean basin, yet it’s one of the “coldest” cities in Italy. Its record is for being the “highest district capital”, which seems crazy at just 936 meters above sea level… Though, it is true. This town of 25,000 inhabitants, dominating Sicily from its perfect core, is often overlooked by mass tourism that prefers more traditional and spectacular destinations. However, if you want some advice, it should be rediscovered and experienced to the fullest: in the quiet of its medieval center, in its gastronomy, in its evocative panoramas. “Navel of Sicily,” “Balcony over Mount Etna”… the names abound. But the emotions aren’t tied to words; they’re real.
How do you get to Enna?
Enna is centrally located in Sicily, making it easily accessible from both main airports: Palermo Falcone & Borsellino (PMO) and Catania Fontanarossa (CTA). A single motorway, the A19 Road, connects both airports as well as the city of Enna, which boasts a direct exit onto this artery. You will initially arrive in Enna Bassa, the new part of the capital of this small Sicilian district, before ascending by public bus or private vehicle to the old town, the historic center located at the top of the early Erei Mountains. To get around the city, all you need is… your feet! But with a good private transfer, you can also explore the beautiful surroundings.
A different Sicily

Enna’s history has its roots in ancient times. Thanks to its strategic location and the natural characteristics of the territory, the city was a true natural fortress for centuries. It was inhabited by the Sicans and later came under the influence of the Greek and Roman civilizations, becoming an important Norman center in the Middle Ages. During the Roman era, its name was Henna, and the fortified position contributed to its reputation as the “Unconquerable City”. For many centuries thereafter, the city was called Castrogiovanni, and only in 1927 was its ancient name, Enna, restored.
A “Lombard” historic center
One of the most important periods was the Norman one, when Enna became one of the island’s main strongholds. Some of its most significant monumental remains date back to this period.
Among the most important symbols, the Castle of Lombardy undoubtedly occupies first place. Located in the highest part of the city, the castle dominates the surrounding landscape. The fortress, characterized by an irregular plan and numerous towers, testifies to the strategic importance that Enna held during the Middle Ages. Its location also affords extraordinary views of the Sicilian hinterland. From its terraces and vantage points, you can see a vast landscape, which on clear days can reach as far as Mount Etna. A short distance from the castle is the Rocca di Cerere (Ceres), one of the most evocative sites from an archaeological and landscape perspective. Here, the goddess of agriculture (Ceres or Demetra) was anciently worshipped within a large sanctuary, of which nothing remains today. The Rocca’s value today is primarily linked to its history and panoramic position. It is an ideal spot where to stop during a stroll and understand the profound connection between Enna, the agricultural landscape of inland Sicily, and classical mythology.
Another unmissable monument is the Cathedral, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Visitation. The church is located in the heart of the historic center, along the important Via Roma. The building is striking for its size and the richness of its interior. The coffered ceiling of the central nave is particularly noteworthy, along with the numerous works and decorations that recount the city’s long religious and artistic history.
Continuing the tour of the historic area, you’ll encounter other monuments of great interest, including the Tower of Frederick II, one of the most characteristic testimonies of the Swabian era. The tower enjoys a panoramic position and is one of the most interesting stops for those wishing to learn about Enna’s medieval architecture.
Enna: nature and myth
A few kilometers from the center of Enna lies Lake Pergusa, one of the most famous natural sites in the area.
The lake is linked to the famous myth of Persephone’s abduction by Hades and Demetra’s search for her daughter. This mythological tradition makes Pergusa a particularly evocative place, where nature and legend meet. Around the lake, you can enjoy walks and outdoor activities. The area also includes the Riva dei Giunchi Trail and the Proserpina Park, green areas dedicated to the deity associated with the myth of Pergusa. For motorsports enthusiasts, the Pergusa Racetrack, which hosts national and international sporting events, is also located near the lake.

Archaeology enthusiasts can also visit Aidone, home to the important archaeological site of Morgantina. The municipalities of Calascibetta, Leonforte, Assoro, Nissoria, Sperlinga, Nicosia and Villarosa also offer interesting opportunities to discover the villages, landscapes, and historical remains of the hinterland.

The parades of hooded men from the various Confraternities of the Passion of Christ, the songs, and the emotional prayers are a cultural spectacle reminiscent of the Spanish Holy Weeks.
