Ithaca: your vacation in the footsteps of Odysseus

6 minutes read

If you are dreaming of a Greek island escape away from the crowds, but deep inside the glory of ancient history, a trip to Ithaca Island could be exactly what you are looking for. Famous as the legendary home of Odysseus (or Ulysses) in Homer’s “Odyssey”, Ithaca combines ancient mythology, beautiful beaches, green hills, traditional villages, and crystal-clear Ionian waters. Unlike some of Greece’s more famous islands, Ithaca has retained a peaceful and authentic character. There are no huge resorts or overwhelming crowds. Instead, visitors can spend their days swimming in secluded bays, hiking through olive groves, enjoying fresh Greek food in waterfront tavernas, and discovering villages where traditional island life is still very much alive.

How and when visit Ithaca?

Late spring and summer are the best time of the year to book a stay at the island of Ithaca. You can also enjoy a vacation there in autumn, because the weather is nice and warm until late October.

In order to get to the island, you might book a low-cost flight to the regional hubs of Lefkada Airport (PVK) or Kefalonia Airport (EFL), in the islands nearby, and from there take a ferry to reach Ithaca. With our private vehicles with a driver, you can easily go from the airport terminals to the boarding points in a short time.

Why visit Ithaca

Ithaca is part of the Ionian Islands, located in western Greece near the larger island of Kefalonia. Its dramatic landscape is one of its greatest attractions. Rugged mountains rise above turquoise bays, while olive trees, cypress forests, and Mediterranean vegetation cover much of the island.

One of the best reasons to visit Ithaca is its atmosphere. The island feels calmer and more intimate than many popular Greek destinations. You can enjoy a long breakfast overlooking the sea, spend the afternoon exploring a quiet beach, and finish the day with dinner beside the water.

Ithaca is also an excellent destination for travelers interested in Greek mythology. According to Homer’s epic poem, Ithaca was the kingdom of Odysseus  , who spent ten years trying to return home after the Trojan War. While the exact historical locations connected to the story remain debated, the island’s association with Odysseus adds a fascinating cultural dimension to any visit.

Vathy: the charming capital of Ithaca

A trip to Ithaca should begin in Vathy, the island’s picturesque capital. Located around a large natural harbor, Vathy is surrounded by green hills and traditional Ionian architecture. The waterfront is the perfect place to take a leisurely walk. Colorful boats fill the harbor, while cafés and tavernas provide excellent spots to sit down and enjoy the scenery.

Vathy is also home to museums and historic buildings where you can learn more about Ithaca’s archaeological and cultural heritage. The Archaeological Museum of Ithaca contains artifacts from different periods of the island’s history, while the Folklore and Nautical Museum offers insight into local traditions and maritime life. In the evening, Vathy becomes particularly atmospheric. Enjoy dinner featuring grilled fish, Greek salad, local cheeses, and other traditional dishes before taking a relaxing walk along the harbor.

The best things to do in Ithaca

There are plenty of things to do in Ithaca for travelers who enjoy both relaxation and adventure.
Ithaca’s villages are among its greatest charms. Visit Stavros, a traditional settlement in the northern part of the island, where you can see a statue associated with Odysseus and enjoy views over the surrounding landscape. Another beautiful village is Frikes, a small fishing port with waterfront restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere. Its traditional windmills and colorful harbor make it an especially photogenic stop. For spectacular views, head to Anogi, one of Ithaca’s oldest villages. The area is known for its historic church and impressive stone formations.

Ithaca beaches are generally smaller and more secluded than those found on larger Greek islands. Many are surrounded by lush vegetation and can be reached by road, hiking trail, or boat. Filiatro Beach, close to Vathy, is a popular choice for swimming in calm, clear water. Sarakiniko Beach is another beautiful option, while Gidaki Beach is famous for its stunning setting and turquoise sea. For a quieter experience, consider exploring some of the island’s smaller coves. Renting a boat or joining a boat excursion is one of the best ways to discover beaches and bays that are difficult to reach by land.

If you enjoy walking, Ithaca has numerous trails connecting villages, beaches, churches, and mountain viewpoints. Hiking allows you to experience another side of the island. Instead of simply traveling between destinations by car, you can walk through olive groves and forests while enjoying views across the Ionian Sea. One of the most rewarding experiences is hiking around the northern part of the island, where the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic.

Always bring plenty of water, particularly during the warmer months, and wear appropriate footwear. Some trails can be rocky and exposed to the sun.

Ithaca food: what to eat on the island

No Ithaca Greece travel experience is complete without enjoying the island’s food. Traditional tavernas serve many classic Greek dishes, including grilled seafood, moussaka, stuffed vegetables, fresh salads, and grilled meats. Look for locally produced olive oil, honey, cheeses, and wine.

One of the best ways to experience Ithacan cuisine is to order several dishes and share them. A typical meal might include Greek salad, tzatziki, grilled octopus, fried zucchini, local cheese, fresh fish, and bread accompanied by olive oil. Don’t rush your meal. Dining in Greece is as much about socializing and enjoying the surroundings as it is about the food.

A great experience to live and to remember

For a first visit, three to five days in Ithaca is a good amount of time. This gives you enough opportunity to explore Vathy, visit several villages, swim at different beaches, enjoy local food, and take a hike or boat excursion without rushing. If you want a slower holiday, a week is even better. Ithaca is an island where the pleasure comes from taking your time. Rather than trying to see everything in a few days, leave space in your itinerary for long lunches, spontaneous swims, and quiet evenings by the sea.

A trip to Ithaca Island in Greece is about much more than sightseeing. It is an opportunity to slow down and experience a quieter side of the Greek islands. From the harbor of Vathy and the traditional villages of the north to secluded beaches and mountain trails, Ithaca offers a remarkable combination of natural beauty, history, mythology, and authentic Greek hospitality.

If you are searching for a destination that feels peaceful, scenic, and genuinely Greek, Ithaca deserves a place on your travel list. Its connection to Odysseus makes the island legendary, but its landscapes, food, people, and relaxed atmosphere are what make visitors want to return.
