Among the main Italian and European ski resorts, we suggest a small town of 800 inhabitants: Madonna di Campiglio, in the Italian region of Trentino. A small village that has grown thanks to winter and summer tourism, welcoming snow sports enthusiasts, hikers, and mountain walkers, depending on the season. Why choose Madonna di Campiglio, among so many ski resorts? Primarily for its human-scale atmosphere, for that “family” feeling, despite it being a popular destination for many VIPs. Madonna di Campiglio is a winter vacation for everyone. Getting there is easy: land at Verona Airport (VRN), which is well served by excellent public and private transportation, including our hourly chauffeurs available to any of the guests’ need.
What you need to know about Madonna di Campiglio
Madonna di Campiglio owes its name and existence to a 13th-century monastery. It was a very important one in the Middle Ages, set at a crossroads for many northern European routes and thus for many pilgrims traveling to and from Rome. It maintained its importance until the 16th century, then fell into a long period of decline. It was recovered in the mid-19th century by an entrepreneur who restored it and transformed it into a hotel. It was such an elegant and charming hotel that it was also chosen by the Austrian royals (the famous Princess Sissi was a regular guest) and many nobles for their holidays. From there, the resort’s tourist reputation grew increasingly global. And the arrival of ski resorts completed the picture.
Madonna di Campiglio: an elegant holiday
Today, Madonna di Campiglio is a small, well-kept, refined, and elegant village. The few buildings in the center reflect its international beauty and while the standard tour includes few monuments and plenty of views, there are many itineraries in the surrounding area. The nearby Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, covering over 50,000 hectares, offers 450 km of mountain trails, allowing enthusiasts to explore this spectacular landscape in every season. Unique locations can be explored on foot, on horseback, or by mountain bike.
About a two-hour drive from Madonna di Campiglio, will allow you to admire the Risla waterfall, the Grosté Pass, Cima Brenta, the historic town of Trento, the city of Bolzano, Riva del Garda with its lake of the same name.
Carnival of Madonna di Campiglio
A winter event not to be missed in Madonna di Campiglio is the Habsburg Carnival. Thanks to several historical groups, this festival reenacts the love story between Princess Sissi and her husband Emperor Franz Josef! Parades, torchlight processions, and even the Grand Imperial Ball are recreated for tourists and locals, illuminating the mountains with vibrant colors and fireworks.
Skiing at Madonna di Campiglio
Between Madonna di Campiglio and Campo Carlo Magno (located a few kilometers from the center), there are 156 km of ski slopes and 60 ski lifts. The so-called “Skiarea of the Brenta Dolomites” is the largest in Trentino and centers around the village of Madonna di Campiglio. It starts with the first lifts at 850 meters and ends at the highest, at 2,500 meters above sea level.
The types of slopes are various and perfect for everyone: the blue slopes such as Graffer, Pradalago, Nube d’Argento, and 5 Laghi are ideal for families with children and those who are not yet confident on skis; for those with more experience and a desire for adventure, the red slopes are located at Corna Rossa Grosté, Fortini, and Canalone Miramonti; black slopes, reserved for experts and professionals, are the famous 3-Tre (where the World Cup is also held!), Monte Spinale, Amazzonia (which winds through a dense forest), and Schumacher Streif.
Madonna di Campiglio also has two snow parks: the Ursus Snow Park Grosté, which is among the largest and best-equipped in Europe, and the Mini Ursus Zeledria, designed for children.
You should book your holiday here because…
• You can ski in a very elegant and lively place
