Year 2026 will be the year of Sri Lanka. Who would have bet? This round island, resembling a charming appendage of Greater India, is perhaps best known for the gentle kindness of its inhabitants, who have emigrated over the years and work all over the world. But what do you know about its territory? The beauty of Sri Lanka is certainly worth discovering, especially its beaches. Among the holiday destinations recommended for the new year, two Sri Lankan beaches surprisingly stand out: Mirissa and Weligama.
Sri Lanka: what to see and how to get there
Also known as Ceylon and nicknamed “the teardrop of India” (due to its geographical location), the independent island of Sri Lanka is inhabited mostly by Tamil and Sinhalese peoples, who are concentrated in the two capitals—the ancient one, Colombo (Kolambah), and the current one, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte.
These two cities are undoubtedly the main tourist attractions to visit if you come to Sri Lanka. They offer wonderful religious and secular architecture, parks, and fountains. Those who love ancient history will also love visiting places such as Anuradhapura, a city of temples and the island’s former medieval capital; Kandy i salso called the “Sinhalese Florence” for its rich artistic heritage; and do not miss Nuwara Eliya, where British colonial architecture stands out.
The island offers numerous itineraries that combine historical beauty and natural wonders. For example, the “city of temples” Dambulla, where religious buildings are located inside spectacular caves. Or the prehistoric ruins of the Sigiriya mountains. Or the village of Aukana with its gigantic 12-meter-tall Buddha! Come admire elephants, crocodiles, buffalo, leopards, jackals, and other exotic animals at the beautiful Hikkaduwa National Park or at Yala National Park.
For a vacation in Sri Lanka, the ideal destination is Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which is well-served by public transportation and private transportation agencies. With Transfeero, you can organize your itineraries thanks to our chauffeured vehicles, dedicated entirely to your needs.
Sri Lankan Beaches
The attraction to rediscover in Sri Lanka isn’t the temples, it’s the beaches! The most famous are Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Passikudah, and Arugam Bay. This year, Mirissa and, especially, Weligama are also added. The beaches here are unique because of the unique intertwining of sea and forest, and spectacular seabeds are almost everywhere, ideal for warm-water diving enthusiasts.
Weligama and Mirissa
Imagine a crescent of pink sand (yes, pink!) on the island’s southern coast, bathed in sunshine year-round and surrounded by a wild, verdant forest: this is the landscape of Weligama. Opposite the beach is a small island that can also be reached by walking across a strip of land. Nearby is a fishing village, traditional restaurants, and a few hotels. The sea is clear and azure, with a seabed rich in mineral and animal wonders. On windy days, excellent waves form here for surfing.
Mirissa, also located in the south, is known for its sophisticated atmosphere! The sea isn’t particularly good for diving here, but the beach is equipped for families with children, groups, and travelers who want to enjoy the sea simply for relaxation. Restaurants and hospitality venues, as well as entertainment options, make this beach a highly sought-after tourist destination… both for local and international visitors.
A gem for every coast…
Sri Lanka’s beaches are beautiful gems, and every coast boasts several.
Unawatuna is a typical tropical beach, with a seabed rich in coral reefs and the wild vegetation that almost overwhelms the sand. Already famous in its homeland as a seaside resort, it offers a wide range of tourist services and every comfort for a truly satisfying holiday. Closely connected to the nearby national park, on the southwest coast, Hikkaduwa masterfully blends wild corners with wonderful tourist resorts; the beach stretches for six kilometers. Located on the east coast, Passikudah extends from a large green plain that plunges into the ocean via a long strip of sand; the area is well-served by hotels, restaurants, and tourist services while maintaining its pristine wilderness. The open sea and high waves are the hallmark of Arugan Bay, a surfer’s paradise, also located on the south coast.
Also worth mentioning are the few beaches in the north of the island, often very long and intertwined with lagoons and lakes: Nilaveli, for example; or Kalpitiya, a kite-surfing paradise!
