Discover Trenčín: A Hidden Gem of European Culture

Strolling through Trenčín – European Capital of Culture

4 minutes read

No, not Vienna… nor Berlin… nor Prague. Forget about beautiful Bratislava , the capital of Slovakia, too. Plan your ideal spring vacation at the little-known town of Trenčín, surprisingly elected this year’s European Capital of Culture. This is still Slovakia, 130 km from the capital which you can reach in about an hour-and-half drive, but you shall feel as immersed in a fairytale setting, complete with castle and romantic legends. Trenčín is the discovery of the year and invites everyone to come visit, for Easter of course, but also during the beautiful spring and summer days afterwards.

Why the Capital of Culture 2026

Why award the prestigious European recognition to this town of 55,000 inhabitants located on the edge of Slovakia, with “one foot” already in the neighbouring Czech Republic and “the other” in Austria? Because Trenčín, in its own small way, is a treasure trove of ancient pearls that seem to have frozen time in a colorful Slavic Middle Ages.

Inhabited since Roman times, the ancient castle (now a museum) has its origins in a military camp and became a noble fortress in the 11th century. An elegant, delicate, and enchanting town has developed around it, with many-color houses, baroque churches, medieval monuments, and lush parks.

You can visit Trenčín directly, or include it as a must-see step during a vacation in Bratislava—whose Štefánik International Airport (BTS), well served by Transfeero private transfers, is the main hub for local tourism.

Tourist itinerary in Trenčín

What will you see in the European Capital of Culture 2026? Your itinerary will undoubtedly begin at the Castle, which dominates the city from atop its namesake rock. Inside, the modern museum houses exhibits of art, history, numismatics, weapons, and natural elements. But it’s the castle’s architecture that draws the tourist’s attention most. Must-sees include the ancient Roman inscription (dated 179 AD), the terrace of the artillery bastion, the Palatine Chapel, the Clock Tower, and the mysterious Well of Love—a 70-meter-deep chasm linked to the love legend of Omar and Fatma, Turkish “Romeo and Juliet” whose love story was more fortunate than that of the Veronese lovers (to free the beautiful Fatma, held prisoner by the lord of the castle, the hero Omar dug a well for three years, offering the lord water in exchange for the girl).

Continue your tour by entering the city through the 16th-century City Gate and enjoy admiring the churches, including the 18th-century Baroque church of the Piarist Fathers and the Renaissance church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as well as the Byzantine-style synagogue dating back to 1913. Also of interest are the Executioner’s House, a nearly intact 15th-century building, the Frasché Skody shortcut (a 16th-century staircase with 90 steps connecting the upper part of the city to the center), the elegant Mierové Námestie Square, and the 18th-century Plague Column, a reminder of the severe epidemic that struck the city. Nature trails in the town include the gardens on the Vah Riverbank and the hiking paths that climb the castle hill.

Traveling out of town

Based in Trenčín, with the right transfer tailored to you—perhaps a Transfeero vehicle with a dedicated driver—you can reach fascinating landscapes located outside the city.

About an hour’s drive west brings you to the Little Carpathians (Malé Karpaty), a series of hills whose highest peaks rise less than 800 meters, where beautiful forests and cultivated fields alternate in a landscape reminiscent of Tuscany! Traveling east for 45 minutes, you’ll find yourself immersed in the Alpine landscape of the Strážov peaks: meadows, woods, and hiking trails dotted with medieval villages.

Over an hour’s drive away, on either side of the border with the Czech Republic, you can reach places such as Brno, Ostrava, Nitra, of course Bratislava, as well as Vienna in Austria, 207 km away.

Having Fun in Trenčín

In addition to cultural, gastronomic (it’s a land of excellent agricultural products and beer), and nature tourism, this year’s role as European Capital of Culture means Trenčín also offers hundreds of events, exhibitions, concerts, and other activities organized for the occasion.
