Something incredible always happens off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal. The oceanbed underwater, churned up by ancient earthquakes, has created gigantic steps over which the waves of the stormy sea do “curl”. And the more they curl, the more they load up on the next waves, which in turn curl and load up the others… until a wall of water as high as a skyscraper appears. And then it crashes against the cliffs with a tremendous roar! Surfers from around the world gather in Nazaré every year in order to challenge these “monsters” . And a large crowd of curious onlookers gathers here to watch them in action.
From Lisbon to Nazaré
If you also want to be on the cliff next to the lighthouse, admiring and cheering on the surfers battling the monster waves, plan your excursion after arriving at Lisbon Airport (LIS), perhaps by booking one of our transfers in advance. Nazaré is only an hour-and-a-half away from the capital via the fastest highway.
Along the way, however, it’s worth stopping to visit some interesting places in this Portuguese region. And perhaps by extending the journey by another hour, you’ll arrive in Nazaré with your eyes filled with new wonders. Why not? Here are the stops on an itinerary that takes you from the serene elegance of the capital to the rugged natural landscape.
Lisbon
Divided by the Tagus River, over which stand numerous fascinating bridges, Lisbon is today one of the most sought-after tourist destinations. It is especially popular with young people, thanks to its taboo-free nightlife… but even older visitors appreciate its beauty and vibrant cultural life. The classic tourist itinerary in Lisbon includes São Jorge Castle, with the historic Alfama quarter at its feet; the Belém Tower, also known as Vasco da Gama Tower; the Cathedral; the Jeronimos Monastery; and the Synagogue. You can also wander around Marquês de Pombal Square or Do Imperio Square, or relax in the Botanical Gardens, Parque Nações, and Vasco da Gama Gardens. Enjoy a splendid panoramic view of the city from the Miradouro Santa Luzìa lookout.
Dedicate a couple of days to Lisbon, so to better experience the local lifestyle. Then prepare for adventure and head north.
Serra de Montejunto
About an hour from the capital, this group of hills just some 700 meters high form a protected natural area. The landscape is typically Mediterranean, home to grasslands and patches of woodland where rare bats hide. The summit of the highest hill in this « serra » is the highest point in the region and offers breathtaking views. Stay long enough for a few photos and for “recharge” in the pure air… then head north again, detouring towards the coast and heading towards Peniche.
Peniche
Just before arriving in Peniche, stop to visit the impressive 9th-century Óbidos Castle, a manor with soaring bastions now converted into a luxury hotel.
Continuing toward the sea, you’ll reach a point where the cliff seems to break, and one of those « pieces » is a small island just offshore. The town of Peniche dominates this panorama with its brightly colored fishermen’s houses. Stop here to stroll and breathe in the scent of Portugal from times gone by. Visit the church of San Pedro, the medieval fort, and the « Doca » (small harbor) home to some delightful eateries.
Enjoy a true meal here with Portuguese seafood flavors (roasted sardines, caldeirada soup, roasted octopus with oil and potatoes, etc.) and then prepare for the final stage. We’re off again to Nazaré.
And finally… Nazaré!
Don’t dive straight into the spectacle of the giant waves. Stop for a moment to experience the true spirit of Nazaré. You can do so at the Valado dos Frades village… among the blue and white houses, the markets, and the authentic traditions. Enjoy this peaceful and quiet place, as just a few kilometers away, the Atlantic Ocean roars furiously and waves over 20 meters high crash onto the rocks.
If it’s surfing season, you can admire the surfers’ stunts from the famous lookout point… otherwise, you’ll simply stand there, with the stormy sea, paying homage to the grandeur of nature. But don’t forget that, on the other side of the cliff, lies a sheltered and tranquil bay with a long golden beach. Nazaré is also a seaside resort, and swimming here… when calm ocean allows to … is a unique experience.
